2016 Fall Interfaith Enviromental Stewardship Event

Calling people of all faiths, or no faith at all, to care for our shared environment on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.  Volunteers will engage in hands-on environmental stewardship by mulching around plantings and trimming trees in a wetlands area at the Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve. This event will offer activities for all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family, your neighbors and your friends.  Meet at The Gathering Place, 5310 S. Willow., Houston 77035 to sign in.  Metro bus line 7 stops nearby.  Tools/supplies will be provided. This event is organized by Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church, Congregation Brith Shalom, and The Blue Mosque, in partnership with the Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy.  The conservancy requires signing of a waiver to participateContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information or to sign up to help

Harvest Moon Festival-Harry Potter Free Movie Night

What is the best way to welcome back a new school year? Join us for a free movie night featuring Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone!

The movie will start around 7:30pm at sun down. Come early for guided tours of the park (every 20 minutes) and a kids nature walk at 6:30pm.

Don't forget to bring your blankets or chairs. Refreshments will be available for purchase and of course there will be free popcorn!

Please no glass containers and dogs must be kept on leash at all times

Don't forget that we are hosting a major fishing tournament earlier that day

First Annual Invasive Fish Round-Up and Carp-a-thon

Join us for a fun day of fishing at the Waterhole! $20 entry fee; kids under 12 and seniors fish for free

Fly fishing and conventional divisions, casting clinics, invasive species presentation, & casting competition, PLUS food trucks, a live band, t-shirts and prizes!

Event Schedule:

Registration 8-9am

Lines in/out 9am-2pm

Weight in 2-3pm

Casting Competition (with demos and clinics) 3pm

Awards (with live band and food trucks) 4pm

Then join us for a free movie in the park for the Harvest Moon Festival beginning at 6pm

Monthly Bird Survey

The Willow Waterhole Bird Survey was started in June 2007 and is held on the third Saturday of each month. During the 2-hour count, the number of species identified can range from around 30 in summer to over 50 in the winter. The survey begins in the parking lot of the Gathering Place at 5310 South Willow Drive. As of the beginning of 2014, the survey had recorded over 160 species total.

Family Fun Day @ the Platou Center.
The Platou Community Center, our neighborhood community center in Chimney Rock Park, will be open the fourth Saturday of each month from 10AM to 2PM starting Saturday, September 26, for Family Fun Days. (The November and December FAMILY FUN DAYS will be on the second Saturday of the month.)
Environmental education programs will be presented with the nearby Willow Waterhole as the classroom; thanks to a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, outside speakers and partnering organizations will bring nature specimens and information about a wide range of topics including birds, flowers, reptiles, insects, wind, water and much more. Craft projects will also enrich family experience. The programs will be geared to preschoolers and children up to the age of 13 and will always be FREE to enjoy.

Each 2nd Sat of the month students from area schools have been helping Board Members and Volunteers on landscaping and cleanup projects at the Park. If you are interested in joining this effort, please join us-no experience necessary!
